The Emmaüs communities are open to all those in need. The people welcomed are called companions. The companions bring the community to life by participating in various tasks, such as collecting, sorting, and selling second-hand items. They are provided with food, housing, laundry services, and receive a small allowance. The communities rely on their activities and donations from individuals. They do not receive any public funding. Every franc spent by the public in Emmaüs stores helps finance the community. The founding principles of the communities are unconditional welcome and financial independence. The goal of the Emmaüs movement is to identify and take concrete action against the causes of poverty and exclusion. THE EMMAÜS MOVEMENT In the context of a severe housing crisis, the first Emmaüs communities were established in France in the early 1950s. Their objective is twofold: on one hand, to enable people in difficulty to regain a sense of purpose in their daily lives, and on the other hand, to provide concrete assistance to individuals and families in need of housing, through the work of the companions who create homes for them. Outraged to see men and women dying of cold, Abbé Pierre publicly spoke out on February 1, 1954, calling on the French population to mobilize to help the most disadvantaged.
